Amy’s Ice Cream – San Antonio, TX

At some point during this evening, one of us (it rhymes with Amanda) decided we had to have ice cream. We were driving near a strip mall and came across this place called Amy’s Ice Cream. As we found out later, Amy’s is a staple ice cream place in Austin, TX, and their shop is doing well here in San Antonio. There was a healthy line in the place, so we thought we’d give it a shot, even though it was raining. It’s still Texas, so it’s hot – but only 2,998 degrees, instead of the usual 3,000.

We discovered the reason there was a healthy line was because they had one guy working. On a Friday night. In Texas. Are you serious? Since we had nothing else to do, we hopped in line with the rest of the people. At one point, some random girl came running in and headed back behind the counter to help the guy out. As it turns out, he had called her because he realized he was the only one there. Apparently, she hadn’t worked there in months and got the emergency phone call asking if she could come in.

They have a couple of hand drawn chalkboard menus around the place with flavors of single ice cream and then also combo flavors with funny names. When people would order the combo things, the new girl would have to look up at the board and figure out how to make them. She was good though. It was one of those marble slab creamery places where they scoop and fold in the ingredients on a slab of marble instead of using some sort of mixer.

When I got up to the counter, I was torn between a couple of things. Should I order a single flavor and add my random bits of candy that sounded good, or should I go with the already ingenious concoctions of flavor they had already created for me? I went with the pre-named combo, simply because of the name. I got the Gray Pirate King’s Lost Booty – pineapple, strawberry, banana, and raspberry.

I did ask if it was pink, and she said she thought it was, but she had never made one before. So she added some red food coloring sprinkles just to be on the safe side. She’s good, this x-employee. The ice cream came out perfectly, exactly as I had hoped. And delicious!

We gorged ourselves on ice cream for a short while. Actually, Amanda Hugginkiss got what was the equivalent of a KFC Potato Bowl of ice cream. It was a huge bowl filled with all kinds of random bits. It was called the Elvis, so I know there were bananas, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and I think Mexican Vanilla Ice Cream. It looked appealing, it was just enormous. I was impressed with how much she ate as well. DeliveryBoy did swoop in and help her out, but I’m telling you, I wouldn’t have been able to eat this thing.

Top 5 things about Amy’s Ice Cream
1. Gray Pirate King’s Lost Booty
2. Awesome pinch hitter girl (I think that’s a baseball reference)
3. Star Wars-themed combos
4. Special requests for colored ice cream can be accommodated
5. Watching Amanda Hugginkiss kill a giant bowl of ice cream

Bottom 5 things
1. Gerd would have been 100% on board with getting ice cream. She liked the marble slab kind of ice cream – actually she liked all kinds of ice cream:)
2. One guy working on a Friday night in Texas
3. Too many awesome choices
4. It is still 2,998 degrees in Texas, even when it rains
5. They were out of the ice cream with alcohol in it, and had it crossed off, so we couldn’t even tell what it was. Bummer.
